About Multiple Sclerosis Kenya Foundation (MSKF) – Advocacy & Care in Africa

We are the Multiple Sclerosis Kenya Foundation, legally registered in Kenya. We champion improved neural health among the citizenry of Africa to reduce the burden of Multiple Sclerosis (MS) and related disorders such as Neuromyelitis Optica (NMO), MOGAD, and other neuroimmune conditions.

Mission

To empower people living with MS through awareness, support services, clinician training and advocacy for equitable care — across Kenya and the African continent.

What we do

Our story: why MSKF was born

MSKF was founded in 2023 as a community based organization (CBO). For years, Kenyans with MS went undiagnosed. We started as a small support circle in Nairobi — today we are the reference patient organisation for neuroimmune disorders in the region.

First in East Africa to launch a dedicated MS patient navigation program. First to translate MS awareness materials into Swahili and Sheng. Our story is one of resilience, community, and the belief that no African should face MS alone.

Why Africa? The unmet need

Multiple Sclerosis is not rare in Africa — it is rarely diagnosed. Lack of MRI infrastructure, few neurologists, and the misconception that MS is a “Western disease” leave thousands without care. MSKF exists to close this gap. We train clinicians to recognise early signs, empower patients to self-advocate, and gather African-specific data to influence global research.

Neuromyelitis Optica (NMO) is disproportionately higher in people of African descent; yet treatment is often unavailable. Through partnerships with Kenyatta National Hospital and Aga Khan University, we are building the first NMO registry in East Africa.

Strategic partners

We collaborate with MS International Federation, African Neurological Society, Kenyatta National Hospital, Amref Health Africa, and University of Nairobi – Department of Neurology. Our work is supported by individual donors and corporate partners committed to neural health equity.

Governance & accountability

MSKF is governed by a Board of Trustees and adheres to the Kenyan NGO Coordination Act. We undergo annual external audit and publish transparent financial summaries. We are a signatory to the MSIF Code of Good Practice.
